PRAY AS YOU WALK ANYWHERE:

Prayer Walking is rooted in Christianity in Western history and evidence of Prayer Walking be found in the life of the Desert Fathers. These Desert Fathers were holy men who lived centuries ago and they left their busy lives in cities to live in the desert. They lived simply with sand under their feet and the heavens above them. While their outer life was shed of so many daily responsiblities, their inner life became free to relate to the Lord and develop their faith in deep ways that could not have been possible without the silence and quiet in the desert. Men and women continue with this practice of contemplative prayer today. We may not be able to retreat to live in a desert, but we can practice God's presence as we walk and pray. All people are on a spiritual path and Prayer Walking is one way to become closer to the Lord in our daily lives.

BENEFITS TO YOUR BODY:

There are also a number of great benefits to our physical bodies as we move and relax while Prayer Walking. Prayer Walking connects body, soul, and spirit while interacting with Jesus Christ through prayer. Here are only a few of the benefits to you:
1. Prayer Walking reduces anxiety and stress.
2. Prayer Walking helps us to control our weight. A study was done with 44,000 women for 10 years who walked more than four hours a week. They found the women had 16% less weight gain around their waists than the normal population (Prevention, 1999).
3. Prayer Walking can improve self-esteem as we feel better about our selves with a boost in confidence.
4. Prayer Walking takes prayer out of our homes and churches and into other places, like the streets where we live.
5. Prayer Walking can strengthen our bones and actually reduce the risk of osteoporosis .
6. Prayer Walking brings us a sense of peace and a feeling of harmony with the world. No matter what condition your body is in, after 10 minutes of walking, your body's level of beta-endorphins increases, which gives you more energy in your daily life.
7. Prayer Walking can reduce the pain of arthritis, help prevent high blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, reduce the risk of developing diabetes, and some have reported that headaches were soothed.
8. Prayer Walking can help improve eyesight. When a group of people who were not active began walking 40 minutes, three times a week, at a brisk pace, those with glaucoma found there was a 20% reduction in eye pressure.
9. Prayer Walking can also keep us from getting colds and other "bugs". Researchers found that a 45 minute walk can bolster the body's immune system.
10. Prayer Walking can bring wisdom into your life as you listen to the Lord speak to you when you pray.

HOW TO PRAYER WALK:

There are basic and simple ideas to follow as you Prayer Walk. First, remember to breathe as you walk and pray. Second, remember to take strolling steps or any pace you decide, but pick a pace that you can follow without thinking about each step. Third, take one step at a time. You may find that you are noticing many new things on your walk - a leaf, a bird, a new flower, etc. Stop and give thanks to God for the joy of creation and then resume your walking pace. Fourth, remember to utter your prayer to God, or you may choose to walk in silence with God. Whether you speak or not, remember to include the Lord and bask in the presence of God as you walk.

BASIC STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL PRAYER WALKING EXPERIENCE:

1. RETREAT to a place that is away from your home, office, or other distractions in your daily life. You need to be away from daily life to gain a fresh perspective.
2. REFLECT on the world around you, the world you typically do not see from your home or office. You may also have something in mind that you want to pray about as you Prayer Walk.
3. REMEMBER to thank God for memories, people in your life, blessings that God has given to you and your fmaily.
4. RETHINK anything that God brings to mind that needs to be changed. If God calls you to some type of improvement, just let go and let God help you to change. Prayer Walking can help you to gain the right perspective to make necessary changes in your life.
5. REPEAT the time of Prayer Walking over and over to gain the most physical and spiritual benefits of Prayer Walking.
